Theme and Summary

The story is about a daughter who struggled with the extramarital affair of his father that eventually produced a son. This son eventually died because of cancer. During the wake, the mistress named Sylvia asked Liza, the daughter, for forgiveness.  At the funeral, her father apologizes to Liza and Liza felt relieved. Cooking sinigang became the background of this story.

Lesson of the Story

I think nobody is perfect and it goes to say that no family is perfect too. People make mistakes. These mistakes can be intentional or unintentional. A mistake is a mistake. But we should always try to learn and move on from  this mistake. We should not be judged by our mistakes. Mistakes should not define us but should make us a better person. Forgiveness is key. We should forgive others as we should forgive ourselves. Mistakes are meant to be learned and not to repeat again.

Families get broken. Families are not perfect. We just have to make most of what is given to us. Nobody want families to break specially but there are circumstances beyond our control.

As a 21st century learner, these stories depict the true Filipino family problems. These stories depict the lives of ordinary Filipino daughters and sons who became victim of broken families. Extramarital affairs has become common that made their children lose confidence, focus and faith. What we can do is to broaden our understanding, forgive and forget and make our lives worthy and always finding happiness in everything we do.
